Rule of 3

Submitted by Jack Milner on September 10, 2025
Three things that have made a massive difference to my productivity, mental health, and overall effectiveness—so I thought I’d share them:
-
I don’t need to keep checking my favourite news websites. A quick glance at the TV news is enough.
-
Avoid social media. It’s designed to eat time.
-
And Stoke City really don’t need me constantly checking how they’re doing.
I love the rule of 3 - breaking things down into threes. It’s not just a productivity hack, it’s also a comedy staple.
The Rule of 3 Joke
When you’re writing a list of three, save the funniest, strangest, or most surprising item for last. That’s where the punch lands hardest.
So, what makes something funny?
-
It’s often surprising or shocking.
-
Or it’s the opposite of what your audience was expecting (sometimes called a reversal).
This is a famous one from Jon Stewart:
“I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighbourhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.”
And speaking of Thanksgiving (a bit of a tenuous segue there), that joke lands even better because my free taster session happens the day before!
Want to master this for yourself?
On November 26th, I’m running a free taster session where you’ll discover the power of 3 in action - whether you want to sharpen your comedy, your communication, or just your everyday impact.
Places are limited, so grab your spot now: standupanddeliver.co.uk/taster-sessions
